An Important Story – Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation

One thing at the 2015 National Heirloom Exposition that left a lasting impression was Mathieu Asselin’s photography display – Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation.

When I first learned about GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) in the late 1990’s, I didn’t know much about real food, but what I did know is that GMO’s didn’t sound “right” to me. The idea of fish DNA being injected into a tomato sounded weird, and definitely didn’t seem like it was a good thing. Thankfully, that tomato never made it to the supermarket, but all other kinds of genetically modified foods have, and are still being sold and consumed today.

I don’t think many realize Monsanto was the manufacture of PCB’s and Agent Orange and I think most know how horrible those chemicals were! It doesn’t make any sense to allow a  company responsible for making such terrible, poisonous products to make chemicals that are sprayed a majority of U.S. food supply, genetically modify our food, and patent seeds. They say their products are “safe” but their behavior in the past makes it difficult for me to believe they are being 100% transparent about their products.

I tried my best to get good pictures but some Mathieu’s photo displays were tall, so I’m sorry if the quality isn’t that great!  There were also captions for every picture, which I’ve retyped them for the few photos I’m sharing.

I hope after seeing these photos, you’ll think twice buying food at grocery stores and other retailers that sell conventional, non-organic food. It almost always contains GMO’s and the fruits and vegetables have been sprayed with Round Up, or another pesticide.

I wrote two posts that can help you access healthy, quality food throughout the United States, to read them click here and here. You can also visit Environmental Working Group’s page to view their very helpful dirty dozen and clean fifteen shopping lists.

I truly believe we can make a difference by voting with our dollars and support local farmers who grow food with integrity without using GMO’s or pesticides. It’s so important for your health, the health of future generations, and for the health of the planet.

This is a magazine ad from 1943 touting the benefits of saccharin. Notice it says one of the main ingredients of saccharin is coal-tar. No wonder it was pulled from the market for being carcinogenic

Danger! What Toxins are in Your Body Products?

This is where it all started for me, not with food, but with body products, weird I know!

Fifteen or so years ago, a co-worker who’d previously been a sales rep for a salon products distributor shared that some chemicals in shampoo where know carcinogens.

Yes, you read that right, carcinogens, aka cancer causing agents!

At first, I was skeptical but she spoke with conviction! She quit that job because even though the industry knew the chemicals were harmful, they still continued to use them. I did my own research, and found she was right!

At the time, there were very few companies producing products without harmful sodium laurel sulfates, parabens, preservatives, and fragrances. She gave me a locally made shampoo to try, and from that point on I tried to avoid sodium laurel sulfates, and parabens in the products I used.

Back then it was nearly impossible to find body wash, hair products, facial care, and deodorant that didn’t contain several harmful chemicals. Slowly, I started to find products that didn’t have some of the worst chemicals, at the time money was tight, so I wasn’t able to do a major overhaul right away.

Thankfully a local, organic, grocery store had a separate body care store that carried more “natural” options. Eventually, shopping at their body care store, allowed me to become more familiar with organic foods, and soon I was learning more why it was important to be concerned about the food I put in my body.

And that’s how my body care products helped change my food choices!

I think many of us often forget, or don’t realize, our skin is also an organ, and it absorbs EVERYTHING we put on it! I wanted to write about this important topic since I started my blog, but it’s been busy, and now I’m finally getting to it.

If you’d rather skip to the list of my FAVORITE and SAFE body products, click here. Otherwise, keep reading to learn more!

My Favorite Detox Methods

The sad fact is we live a toxic world, there is no shortage of information about the topic. Organic Consumers Association and Environmental Working Group provide excellent information about pesticides, toxins in our food, water, household, and personal care products. Detox is  something we should all do periodically.

The organ that needs the most support is our liver. Our modern lifestyle is hard on our liver. Our on the go lifestyle has us working to much, exercising to little, keeps us from eating right, or getting enough sleep. Those are just a few things that stress out our liver. This organ does so much for us, it’s overworked and under appreciated! This link provides excellent detail of liver function.
